And Then I Read: WEDNESDAY COMICS 4-9

The grand tabloid experiment that is WEDNESDAY COMICS is over, but I’m still catching up. These issues were all just as much fun to read as the first three, though I have to admit at times difficult to handle! I understand there will eventually be a tabloid-size harcover collection, which sounds cool.
In my review of the first three issues, I went through the features individually. I don’t think my opinions have changed much since then, though I’ve warmed a bit to the writing on Metal Men and Deadman. Still liking Batman, Superman, Kamandi, Metamorpho, Green Lantern, Hawkman, Supergirl, Metal Men, Sgt. Rock, Flash, Demon and Deadman, still unable to enjoy Teen Titans, Strange Adventures and Wonder Woman.

Most creative award goes to the Flash page in issue 9, which has as its background comic strips in other styles, but still related to the Flash strip. Closely followed by the Metamorpho snakes and ladders game, and the two pages using the abbreviations of all the elements in short sentences.
For anyone who remembers the glory days of newspaper Sunday comics, this will bring back memories, but in general it’s as forward-looking as it is retro. And a truly unusual concept and reading experience. Hats off to editor Mark Chiarello, and to DC for going with the idea. Recommended.
I missed all of these, since I don’t have a decent
comic shop in my local area.
I may just have to save up for the hardcover.
This looks very cool.
