And Then I Read: THE WARLORD 6 & 7

Mike Grell is back, and WARLORD has him! Well, he’s been back, of course, as writer and cover artist, and the interior art for the first six issues, pencils by Chad Hardin, has been fine. Issue 6 wraps up that initial storyline well, with Travis Morgan stepping up to take charge of the situation in a heroic manner, helped by his allies and particularly his daughter, a powerful sorceress.

But what I really want to write about is issue 7, where Mike does it all, story and art, and it’s terrific. Like most artists, Grell has a personal style, and it was made for WARLORD. Though it’s been years since he drew the character in an entire issue, he’s lost none of his power to make it work. There are quite a few pages in this issue with little or no dialogue, but the art tells it perfectly. How this story relates to what came before is not clear, but it doesn’t matter. It has the grace and timelessness of a Greek or Norse legend, as The Warlord saves a fair maiden from death. And it will continue to at least the next issue. Looking forward to it. Highly recommended, especially for WARLORD fans of old.
