J.H. WILLIAMS III, continued

The finale of Promethea, issue 32, was the most difficult and amazing project yet, and once again challenged all of us. I've described the process we went through in detail in a text article at the end of the Promethea Book 5 collected edition, but essentially the 32 pages of the issue formed two giant 16-page images, with each page carrying a fount of information from Alan on magic and all aspects of life, connected, and readable in a variety of ways. A tour-de-force writing effort, and one that Jim and I had to struggle to keep up with. Production time on this issue alone was about three months, and then I had to create the poster versions as well. It was quite an achievement, but I have to say that, by the end, I hoped never to have to open those gigantic files again!

Though we had known it was coming for a long time, J.H. and I were sad to see Promethea end. WildStorm offered us another project, Desolation Jones, written by Warren Ellis, a very different, and much darker sort of story, and Jim decided to take it on. I lettered it, and feel we did some good work, though it wasn't seen by that many people, and in fact felt like a bit of a letdown after Promethea.

Another project we worked on together was the first and last issues of Seven Soldiers of Victory, bookending a large multi-book series written by Grant Morrison. This was fun, and again gave Jim a chance to use a variety of styles for the different story sections, and I got to do some interesting things with the lettering as well.

Our most recent comics project is Batwoman, now being published in Detective Comics beginning with issue 854. Wonderful work from J.H., as always. And I must mention the exclusive signed print we're collaborating on, Drawing The Sword, which has just been released, and can be purchased on my BUY STUFF page, for which J.H. created a new piece of terrific art.

Working with J.H. Williams III is always exciting and fun, and I hope it will long continue.
