And Then I Read: SWAMP THING ANNUAL 2

Charles Soule’s writing on this title continues to surprise and entertain me. While this annual is pertinent to the current storyline of the title, it’s very much a stand-alone story that reads like a classic folk tale of a quest for enlightenment. Alec Holland’s Swamp Thing is being tested by the Parliament of Trees to see if he will remain strong as their avatar. He is taken to and tested by three past avatars, each with a fascinating story, each with apparently unbeatable powers to overcome, and each, ultimately, with important lessons and information. This is so much more fun to read than the usual slug-fest. The art by Javier Pina and Kano is excellent, capturing mood, mystery and personalities perfectly.

Highly recommended.
