Well, here’s an hour and a half I’ll never get back, but at least it’s included in my Disney Plus subscription. Johnny Baxter (Dean Jones) is working at his dull corporate job in New York City when a lawyer arrives to tell him he’s inherited a small hotel in the hills of Colorado from his uncle. He decides to quit his job and move his family there, though none of them are for it. He and his wife Sue (Nancy Olsen), his daughter Chris (Kathleen Cody) and his son Richard (Johnny Whitaker) and arrive in the small town and get directions to his uncle’s place, which as you might expect is a run-down ruin, but Johnny is determined to make a ski resort of it, and they have the snow and the slopes. An out of work old man (Harry Morgan), former friend of the uncle, agrees to help, Johnny gets a loan from the town banker (Keenan Wynn) and through a series of mishaps and miracles, he gets his resort, but to keep it he has to raise money by winning a skimobile race. Johnny has already proved he can’t ski, and that’s bound to be another disaster.
My biggest trouble with this film is that the crazy ski tricks and snowmobile tricks Johnny somehow performs strain credulity beyond the breaking point, and make the entire thing seem silly. Yes, he also has bad luck, but everything seems to turn out well for him in the end, and much of what the family accomplishes with the inn and resort would require far more time, work, and money than they have. I would almost rather there be some kind of magical explanation, at least it would give a reason for Johnny’s successes. Ah well, not sure how many more of these comedies I will watch. Running time is 93 minutes, and it made over six million dollars, so I guess audiences liked it.
