Disney Features 110: CHARLEY AND THE ANGEL

This 1973 fantasy comedy was Fred MacMurray’s final Disney film, and he’s excellent in it, as is Harry Morgan as his guardian angel. Also fine is Cloris Leachman as MacMurray’s wife. Kurt Russell has a smaller role as their daughter’s boyfriend, Vince Van Patten is the older son. Charley Appleby is a frugal, hard-working hardware store owner in a small town trying to survive the 1930s Depression. His loving wife Nettie (Leachman) is raising their daughter Leonora and two sons Willie and Rupert. Charley doesn’t have much time for his family, and one day a guardian angel (Morgan) appears to tell him his time is almost up. This changes Charley’s attitude, but is there time to make things right? When his sons get involved with bootleggers, Charley is determined to save them.

I liked this one, it has a good dose of emotion, some fun angel fantasy effects, a thrilling car chase, and a satisfying ending. The running time is 93 minutes, and I watched it on Amazon Prime.
