Disney Features 113: SUPERDAD

Perhaps the lamest Disney romantic comedy to this point, the title led me to think there might be some element of fantasy, but it was all too prosaic. Bob Crane (Hogan’s Heroes) is Charlie McReady, a lawyer in California, his wife Sue is played by Barbara Rush, their teenage daughter Wendy is Kathleen Cody, Kurt Russell is her boyfriend Bart. Joe Flynn plays his typical grouchy boss role, and Dick Van Patten is Charlie’s business partner. Wendy and Bart have graduated high school and are supposed to be getting ready for college, but spend most of their time at the beach with their gang of slacker friends. Charlie manages to get Wendy a scholarship at Huntington College, while Bart and her friends are going to City College. Charlie tries hard to be a pal to Wendy, but that leads to all kinds of embarrassing failures, and at her new college, Wendy falls under the spell of a radical hippie painter. Can Charlie and Bart get her away from him?

This film looks good, but the story and writing are poor, and very little of it is funny. I can’t help comparing it to The Graduate (1967). Both films are about parents and their young adult children trying to navigate new relationships and the time period, both end in a wedding. One is brilliant, one is predictable and dull. The acting makes a difference, but above all it’s the writing. Running time is 95 minutes, it made about seven million dollars, but was a critical failure and is described as a bomb. I certainly can’t recommend it.
