Disney Features 117: THE ISLAND AT THE TOP OF THE WORLD

This 1974 lost world fantasy adventure is very much in the style of Jules Verne, but is loosely based on a 1961 novel by Ian Cameron. While the book is contemporary, the film puts it in 1907, and adds a fabulous airship, among other changes. British millionaire Sir Anthony Ross (Donald Sinden) is planning an expedition to the Arctic to search for his lost son Donald (David Gwillim), and recruits an American anthropologist Professor Ivarsson (David Hartman). They travel in the newly invented airship of French Captain Brieux (Jacques Marin). Donald’s Eskimo friend Oomiak (Mako) is also recruited against his will, as he was the last to see Donald on a mysterious island hidden by clouds in the Arctic Sea. When they get there, the airship crashes, and they find the island is volcanic and has a temperate inner valley where Vikings have been living cut off from the world for a thousand years. They find Donald, but the newcomers are not welcome, and have all kinds of trouble.

I enjoyed this, the effects by Peter Ellenshaw are great, and there’s never a dull moment. The running time is 94 minutes, it cost 8 million and made 10 million dollars, so a mild success. I watched it on Disney Plus.
