GASPAR SALADINO in OTHER T TITLES

All images © DC Comics. From TALES OF GHOST CASTLE #3, Sept-Oct 1975

This article gathers all the titles beginning with T that didn’t have enough Gaspar Saladino material for a separate listing. I’ll look at covers first, then stories. The cover above is for a “mystery” book that lasted only three issues. Gaspar did the logo and all the other lettering on this final cover. DC was already publishing GHOSTS, so perhaps there wasn’t enough interest in another similar title.

From TALES OF THE GREEN LANTERN CORPS #1, May 1981

This three-issue miniseries featured the first DC cover art by Brian Bolland. Saladino did the fine scroll caption at the bottom.

From TALES OF THE GREEN LANTERN CORPS #3, July 1981

Gaspar also did the scroll caption on this one. It’s eclipsed by that amazing art in this case.

From TALOS OF THE WILDERNESS SEA #1, Aug 1987

This annual-sized one-shot has a burst blurb by Saladino, who also lettered the story, see below. I did the logo.

From THE THREE MOUSEKETEERS #3, Sept-Oct 1970

Created by Sheldon Mayer, this funny animal trio had their own series in the 1950s, and was revived in a new series in 1970 that lasted seven issues. Some covers had no lettering, this one has some by Gaspar on the TV.

From THE THREE MOUSEKETEERS #6, March-April 1971

A larger issue had room for more stories, and Saladino lettered the character names as well as the burst at upper left.

From THRILLER #4, Feb 1984

A series using pulp magazine themes in a modern way, some covers had no lettering, this one has a creative blurb by Gaspar at the bottom, with text pulled from the John Lennon song, “Happiness is a Warm Gun.”

From THRILLER #5, March 1984

Another creative and stylish blurb that suggests Elvis Presley to me. Love the tiny arrows in the character name.

From THRILLER #12, Nov 1984

By this final issue the creative team had changed. I think Saladino lettered the computer-style blurb under my logo.

From TALOS OF THE WILDERNESS SEA #1, Aug 1987

Here’s a page of fine Gil Kane art with Gaspar’s lettering from this one shot. Gaspar was probably requested by his friend Gil.

From TEAM TITANS #1D, Sept 1992

In 1992 a new version of the Teen Titans was launched with an unusual gimmick: multiple first issues, each with different art, each focused on one member of the team. Gaspar lettered the one featuring the character Redwing.

From TOTAL JUSTICE #1, Oct 1996

This was a three-issue miniseries promoting a new line of DC action figures from Kenner, characters mainly from the Justice League of America, but also others like Robin. Gaspar lettered all three issues.

To sum up, I found Saladino lettering on these covers:

TALES OF GHOST CASTLE: 3

TALES OF THE GREEN LANTERN CORPS: 1, 3

TALOS OF THE WILDERNESS SEA: 1

THREE MOUSEKETEERS: 3, 5-6

THRILLER: 4-5, 12

That’s a total of 10. Details on his story lettering covered here are below.

TALOS OF THE WILDERNESS SEA #1 Aug 1987: 45pp

TEAM TITANS #1D Sept 1992: 18pp

TOTAL JUSTICE #1 Oct 1996: 22pp

TOTAL JUSTICE #2 Nov 1996: 22pp

TOTAL JUSTICE #3 Nov 1996: 22pp

That’s 129 pages in all. Other articles in this series and more you might enjoy are on the COMICS CREATION page of my blog.
