Incoming: STARSTRUCK 8-10

Not a review, since I lettered it back in the dim corridors of history, just a few comments. I can’t tell you how good it is to see this series being reprinted for current readers in such a fine and attractive format. The colors by Lee Moyer are wonderful, bringing out details I never noticed before myself, and I looked closely at the original art while lettering it. It’s kind of unfortunate that the coloring process has given a slight halftone blur to all the lettering, along with the art, but you have to look very closely to see that, and it reads fine.

And some of those pages had quite a lot of lettering, too! If the words are entertaining I don’t mind that, and it generally evens out in the end anyway. I don’t know if it’s been mentioned anywhere in these reprints, but the character Galatia 9 was played in the original stage play by author Elaine Lee, and Michael has done a fine job of portraying Elaine in this part of the series, as above (minus the scars and such in real life). As before, I remember working on most of the main story in these issues, but the Galactic Girl Guide backups I remember less well, I’m not sure why. The one in issue 10 I’d forgotten about completely. Did it ever see print before? Perhaps someone out there knows.

The series will wrap up with issue 13, I think. I’m looking forward to seeing the rest, and getting the collected edition when that comes out.

Thanks for the kind words. One of the challenges peculiar to this project was taking wide Heavy-Metal-sized pages and making them suit a modern comic. That meant Michael added new and expanded art (17% in height added to every page), and that he and I had to move the word balloons around to better suit the new layout. I also had to “create” new type for some pages by cutting an pasting your fine letters from existing pages.

I’ll be happy to send you some befores and afters if you care to see them.
If you find yourself in Portland Oregon, please let me know. I’d be happy to buy you a refreshing drink. 🙂
