An unlikely but interesting story of Tawny, a greyhound raised for racing who escapes into the desert southwest and gradually figures out how to survive the harsh conditions. He was devoted to his first trainer, but when that man died of a heart attack, Tawny felt no connection to the owner and other kennel staff, and took his chances. He has encounters with lots of other desert animals, and picks up a collie pup partner, but also makes an enemy of Brutus, leader of another small band of homeless dogs who are survivors, and feel they rule the territory. Eventually a rancher comes into the area looking for young burros he can catch and sell, and sees potential in Tawny if he can only win his trust.

A good read, recommended.
