In 1998 Dave drew a Doom Patrol story for an annual-sized comic titled LEGENDS OF THE DC UNIVERSE 80-PAGE GIANT (glad I didn't have to design a logo for that one!) Written by James Robinson, it was intended to look like the original Doom Patrol stories from the 1960s. Dave asked me to letter it in that style, and I did so on overlays, I think. I can't locate an example of the lettering, but it was fun to do. © DC Comics In 1999 I worked on a fun and challenging project called FANBOY, a six issue series written by Mark Evanier, with the main artist being Sergio Aragonés, but with lots of other artists contributing short pastiche pieces from classic DC features. Dave drew two pages about an alien Green Lantern, and I was asked to letter it in Dave's style. It would have been simpler to have Dave letter it, but I enjoyed trying to letter like Dave, and he said he thought it looked reasonably close! © America's Best Comics In 2000 another pastiche appeared with art by Dave in issue six of TOM STRONG, for which I was doing all the lettering. Once again Dave did finished art, and I lettered on overlays, in a style that tried to mimic lettering from the 1940s, in early Superman stories, for example. I'm not real happy with the way the lettering turned out, but it does have that somewhat clunky feel of the period. Dave and I also worked on the cover design for the issue, which was fun, and he turned in a wonderful piece of painted art for it. © DC Comics, and IPC Media, Ltd. In 2005 I worked with Dave again, briefly, doing the logo for the ALBION series published by WildStorm/DC. The design was Dave's, I just finished it up. © DC Comics and IPC Media, Ltd. A similar series, THUNDERBOLT JAXON again had a logo and cover design Dave and I worked out together, and this time Dave wrote the book and I lettered it. © DC Comics and IPC Media, Ltd. The art by John Higgins was quite good, and I enjoyed the project immensely. Kind of fun, also, to be working with two of the three creators responsible for WATCHMEN. That brings my work with Dave Gibbons up to date. Hope we get a chance to do more in the future! All text and images © Todd Klein, except as noted. All rights reserved. |
